Pastoral
At Maniototo Area School, we prioritize our students’ wellbeing with dedicated support systems and compassionate staff. By valuing and supporting our students, we help them gain confidence, engage in learning, and feel optimistic about their future taking advantage of every opportunity presented.
Classroom teachers
Everyone has the right to learn in a safe, supportive, and attractive environment. We share the responsibility for your child’s education with you. Children learn best when what is being taught at home is reinforced by what they are learning at school and vice versa. We welcome your involvement and participation in your child’s activities. Feel free to contact the classroom teacher to discuss your child’s progress and learning.
Whanau teachers
The pastoral care of students is overseen by their whānau teacher. All secondary students belong to a whānau group. Each whānau group comprises a mixture of students from across year levels 9 – 13. The student remains in the same whānau group each year, meaning students will have the same whānau teacher from Year 9 to Year 13. This enables them to develop a strong bond over time, where the whānau teacher has a very in-depth understanding of the student’s needs, interests and abilities.
Our whanau teachers are:
- Mr Nigel Pacey
- Ms Joanna Brooks
- Ms Anna Sillibourne
- Mrs Michelle Dowling & Mrs Amanda Graham
Learning Support: The focus of our Learning Support team is to accelerate and support the learning of students experiencing challenges with their studies. Our staff will support every child in a safe, caring and non-judgemental environment.
Special Assessment Conditions (NCEA): We ensure students who qualify for special assessment conditions (SACs) receive them for NCEA. Our staff fully inform students and parents about the processes and procedures.
PB4L
The Positive Behaviour for Learning, also known as PB4L, is helping New Zealand schools build a culture where positive behaviour and learning is a way of life. PB4L looks at behaviour and learning from a whole-of-school as well as an individual child perspective.
Maniototo Area school began PB4L in 2016, creating and implementing our own framework for dealing with and acknowledging behaviour.
Since the implementation of the programme we have worked hard to embed our 5 values Participation, Respect, Integrity, Determination and Empathy. We believe they have become a fundamental part of our school’s culture.
We have an acknowledgement system of PRIDE cards, postcards and badges.
Kiva
In 2024 we joined the network of 20 schools globally, and 70 schools in New Zealand using the KiVa programme.
KiVa is an anti-bullying programme – it helps students understand what bullying is and provides schoolwide strategies to help them respond. The programme has classroom lessons, an intervention programme for incidents of bullying, annual surveys and monitoring.
We have a strong belief that all students and staff should feel safe and supported at school. We know that bullying can happen, and does happen, in every school. Adopting the KiVa programme demonstrates that at Maniototo Area School, we are unwilling to tolerate it.
